View of Nevis from St Kitts by Nicholas Pocock

Acquisition of painting by Nicholas Pocock (1741 - 1821) : 'A View of Nevis from Kitts', 1790. It was commissioned by John Pinney, the builder and owner of the Georgian House in Great George Street Bristol, who was also the owner of large estates on the West Indian island of Nevis. The painting depicts the island as seen from St Kitts, part of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean, and provides dramatic visual evidence of Bristol's dependence upon the West Indies for so much of its prosperity in the 18th century. oil on canvas in original frame.
