Basket-hilted broadsword with silver hilt

Acquisition of Basket-hilted broadsword with silver hilt presented to Lieutenant-colonel David Stewart of Garth in 1808 by officers of the 78th Regiment of Foot, second battalion. The broadsword was worn by him during King George IV's visit to Edinburgh in 1822. The hilt, by Joshua Johnson, incorporates oval gilt panels bearing Garth's Arms and representation of the battalion's officers' shoulder-belt plate. The blade is faintly etched with a presentation inscription and appropriate iconography.
