Acquisition at auction of George Cross of Staff Sergeant Sidney Rogerson. In January 1946 railway wagons were being loaded with ammunition at Savernake Forest, Wiltshire. There was a sudden violent explosion and fires broke out all over the area. A total of 27 railway wagons and two lorries blew up. Staff Sargeant Sidney Rogerson, with great courage and calmness, took charge of the situation and at one stage climbed under a burning truck full of shells to rescue two badly injured men.
