Gold Box with Enamelled Panels by Moser

Acquisition of a gold box with signed enamel plaques by George Moser (1706-83), the 1st keeper of the Royal Academy of Arts. This 'Alexander the Great' box was formerly in the Bute Collection, Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute In 1755, the Real of Bute was invited to take on the duties of mentor to the Prince of Wales. The box is a statement of the ideals which Bute taught George III and is a political statement of the nature of kingship. For display in the new Museum of Scotland, which opened in 1998.
