Horse Frightened by a Lion by Stubbs

Acquisition of painting Horse Fightened by a Lion by George Stubbs. The dramatic theme of a lion attacking a horse preoccupied Stubbs for over 30 years. It inspired 17 known works including oil paintings, enamels, prints and a relief model in Wedgwood clay. The series consists of 4 episodes in a terrifying attack on the passive horse. this is the first stage as the horse scents the lion emerging from its cave and rises up in fright. It was probably the pair to Horse Devoured by a Lion: the 2 pictures were shown at the Society of Artists in 1763, the first on the theme to be exhibited by Stubbs.
