Peep Behind the Scenes at Covent Garden by John Nixon

Acquisition of watercolour by John Nixon (fl. 1781-1818) A Peep behind the scenes: Covent Garden Theatre 1802. The view taken form the wings shows a performance of the play 'The Poor Gentleman' in progress. The artist has identified four of the actors: S Johnson, Emery, Munden and Lewis. On the left above the door is a notice warning of the forfeit for opening the stage door. At the back a scene changing system of grooves can be seen.
