Petworth Park Storm Damage

Restoration and replanting following damage in the great storm of October 1987. The grounds at Petworth measure 750 acres, with 25 acres being pleasure grounds that form a woodland garden. The park is one of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown's first project as an independent designer. When he arrived at Petworth there was a rectilinear garden between the house and lake; Brown swept this away, dammed a stream and made a serpentine lake that became the park's centrepiece. Tree's and circular clumps were placed on hills, ridges and other significant locations. the estate continues to be managed as a deer park, in addition there is a flower garden with a Doric Temple and ionic rotunda.
