Samson and the Philistines, Sculpture by Foggini

Acquisition of marble sculpture which depicts Samson on the point of slaying two terrified Philistines. The sculptor was Vincenzo Foggini (fl1725-1753) It was originally acquired in Florence in 1749 by Charles Watson-Wentworth, Lord Malton, for the Grand Hall of the family seat Wentworth Woodhouse. It is the last of the great Florentine Samson groups which began with Michelangelo and carried through Giambologna.
