St Ivo Intervening on Behalf of the Poor, drawing by Pietro da Cortona, from Holkham Hall

Acquisition of a drawing, squared for transfer, of 'St Ivo Intervening on behalf of the Poor by Pietro Berrettini, called Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669). The design is for the large altarpiece commissioned from Cortona to decorate the high altar of the Church to Sant 'Ivo Sapienza in Rome, the famour church designed by Carlo Borromini. The picture was left unfinished at the painter's death. Designs of this sort are a great rarity in Cortona's oeuvre and this example is by far the best to have survived in this country.
