St Nicholas' Hospital Church, Harbledown, Wall Paintings

Conservation of wall paintings at St Nicholas Hospital Church, Harbledown, nr Canterbury, Kent. St Nicholas' Hospital is a group of buildings on a hill at Harbeldown, just outside Canterbury. It was originally founded by Archbishop Lanfranc in the 11th century to house lepers. The church is Grade I listed and much of the Norman Chapel, including the nave and west end, remains intact, with 12th and 14th century additions. The nave and the chancel were decorated with figurative paintings from about 1350 and much of the scheme remains intact. NHMF was approached to assist with a second phase of conservation of the paintings.
