Victoria Cross and Indian Mutiny Campaign Medal of Lance Corporal William Goate

Acquisition of the Victoria Cross and accompanying Indian Mutiny Campaign Medal awarded to the 24 year-old Lance Corporal William Goate of the 9th Lancers. Under heavy fire at the siege of Lucknow, Goate made repeated - eventually - successful attempts to recover the body of an officer, apparently thinking the man badly wounded but still alive. Goate ws trying to save him from capture and torture,w hile risking the same fate himself.
